Cristina Duarte is a director, actress and lecturer. Born in Portugal, she immigrated to the United States with her mother when she was seven. A longtime New Yorker, she has worked professionally for over two decades.
Christina is a member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers. She has directed numerous productions in New York City and Santa Fe, including the premiere of Jon Jorie’s comedy slapstick “The Almost Unbelievable Christmas Spectacular” at the Greer Garson Theater in Santa Fe. Her film director credits include the documentary Phoebe Brand: A Dedicated Life (IMDB).
As a director, Christina is passionate about telling the story of our complex and courageous humanity. She is particularly interested in plays that address race, gender, age, and other related social issues. She loves stories with characters who strongly defy social norms, but also loves directing comedies and classics whose richness and voice still resonate. She is interested in mentoring on the power and beauty of the human experience.
Christina has taught at Marymount Manhattan College, Brooklyn College, Hunter College, Queens College, Stella Adler Studios, and Santa Fe University of Art and Design, and served as the lead faculty member of the Performing Arts Department. She is also the former artistic director of the prestigious Santa Fe Theater, “the oldest continuously operating theater west of the Mississippi.”
Christina is also an acting coach. She directs actors in private and on film sets. Additionally, she works with corporate and government employees to improve their public profile and public speaking.
Christina is a proud recipient of the 2019-2020 Brooklyn College Teaching Fellowship, the University of Rochester’s 2018 Teaching Excellence Award, and the 2013 New York Young Audience Excellence Partner Award.
Christina holds an MA in Directing from Brooklyn College, an MA in Drama from Hunter College and a BA from Bard College. She is a graduate of the Stella Adler Performing Arts Studio, where she studied with Grand Lady herself and many other talented teachers and guest artists.
Cristina is a member of Actors’ Equity and SAG/AFTRA. She has acted in a variety of stage productions, independent films, commercials, and television, and has had supporting actress roles in Law & Order, Once Upon a Time, All My Children, and Saturday Night Live. She has also performed at several New York comedy clubs including: Caroline’s, The Comic Strip, Gotham and Stand-up NY.
