Dewayne Smith Obituary, Pedestrian Killed In U.S. 131 Crash

A 49-year-old man struck and killed while trying to cross U.S. 131 is being remembered as a hard-working father.

Dewayne Smith was struck and killed about 10 p.m. Thursday, March 30 along northbound U.S. 131 near Wealthy Street. His vehicle had run out of gas and he was trying to cross the freeway.

Two of his children, ages 5 and 7, had been in his vehicle and were not harmed.

Smith worked at Michigan Wheel, a propeller maker, and was a skilled welder.

Bruce Dieterle, CEO of Michigan Wheel, said the company employs 85 people and Smith was well known.

“Dewayne was one of those guys who was bigger than life,” he said, describing Smith’s likeable attitude.

“From the front office to the back, everybody like that guy,” Dieterle said.

Dieterle said Smith always was willing to do more than asked.

“He was always saying ‘What do you need me for? What can I do,?” he said.

A GoFundMe page was established to help Smith’s family. He is a father of five, including a 1-year-old.
