Stephen Clare; 50-year-old San Antonio Man Shot & Killed Child In Alamo Heights

The suspect arrested on suspicion of murdering a child under the age of 10 following a domestic shooting in Alamo Heights on Monday evening, April 10, has been identified as 50-year-old Stephen Clare, according to officials with the San Antonio Police Department.

Clare is suspected of shooting his 28-year-old ex-wife and two of their children, ages 1 and 2 respectively, at the woman’s home located on the 500 Block of Robinhood Place. When officers arrived on the scene they found the woman suffering from a gunshot wound through the neck and lower torso on the sidewalk. Police say that following the shooting the victims were transported to the hospital in critical condition, where they underwent surgery. One child was later pronounced dead.

Before the shooting, Clare was reportedly arguing inside the house with four children inside. Two of the children, an 8 and 11 year-old, were able to escape the home by breaking glass on the windows, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said during a press conference Monday night.

Clare allegedly fled the scene to his residence, where he was later confronted by law enforcement. He left the home and was arrested by police. Clare is facing charges of the capital murder of a child under 10 and several counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, SAPD said

“It’s heartbreaking to see a family destroyed like this by someone for whatever reason decided they would take a gun and shoot a bunch of little kids and the mom,” McManus said. “It’s just heartbreaking to see this happen.”
