Van Winkle Obituary, Funeral Held For Mary Van Winkle, South Elgin Bar Owner & Longtime Fire Protection District Board Member
Funeral services were held Friday for Mary Van Winkle, longtime owner of a South Elgin pub and president of the South Elgin and Countryside Fire Protection District Board.
Van Winkle, 70, of St. Charles, died March 25.
Van Winkle opened Mary’s Corner Tap at 304 Mill St. in the 1980s. Her husband, Jerry Cass, was the bar manager and died about a month before his wife, the business’ Facebook page said.
Van Winkle became a member of the fire protection district board in 2010 and was chosen its president in 2015, according to her obituary.
She also was head of South Elgin’s Heritage Commission, a founding member of the Riverfest Committee and the Village’s Special Events Committee, and a member of the South Elgin Parental Advisory Committee.
The fire protection district honored Van Winkle by lowering flags at all fire district properties to half-staff and hanging mourning bunting at all stations.
A visitation was held Thursday followed by a funeral Friday at Laird Funeral Home in Elgin. She was buried at South Elgin Cemetery.
She is survived by seven children, three siblings, 19 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Van Winkle’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, her obituary said.
