Yarnell Green Jr Death and Obituary, Youngstown Victim Shot to Death in Connection to Rowan Sweeney Case; Suspect Arrested

32-year-old Yarnell Green Jr. has been identified as the victim shot early Sunday, September 18, 2022. Youngstown Police have arrested and charged 23 -year old Johnny Serrano Jr. with the murder of Green.

Nearly two years to the date, a man shot at the Struthers’ home where 4-year-old Rowan Sweeney was killed, has now been shot to death as well.

The 32-year-old man shot and killed in downtown Youngstown early Sunday, Sept. 18 has been identified as Yarnell Green Jr., according to a family member.

Green was shot multiple times around 1:40 a.m. on Federal Street near Hazel Street. Youngstown Police on Monday afternoon arrested and charged 23-year old Johnny Serrano Jr. of Struthers with the murder of Green.

Green’s sister Sahara Blairs told 21 News her brother didn’t know Serrano. On September 21, 2020, Green was shot along with three others the Perry Avenue home in Struthers where the young boy was killed.

In October of 2020, Mahoning County Prosecutor Paul Gains told 21 News that Green was shot multiple times by alleged shooter Kimonie Bryant.

Green at the time was living with Alexis Schneider, Rowan’s mother, at the Struthers home. According to Gains, Green was self-employed as a barber in 2020 and received a check for several thousand dollars in federal pandemic unemployment assistance funds.

The next pre-trial with clients date against Bryant, who is charged with aggravated murder and attempted murder in the Sweeney case, is set for Tuesday, Sept. 20 in Judge Anthony D’Apolito’s courtroom at 2 p.m.

The motive for the Sunday shooting of Green is not known at this time. The Green family and friends will hold a vigil and ballon release in his memory on West Federal Street Monday, September 19, 2022 at 6 p.m.
